Plan a morning for Pigeon Island if you are heading to Nilaveli Beach on the east coast of Sri Lanka. From the shore, this little island might not seem like much—but what's under the surface is pure magic and it is only a short boat ride away.

Pigeon Island, one of the few maritime national parks in Sri Lanka, is named after the blue rock pigeons that nest here. Its vivid coral reefs, shallow waves, and high likelihood of finding baby reef sharks are well-known among snorkeling lovers. Furthermore, this little island will captivate you regardless of your level of experience—from total novice to pro-snorkeler around the globe.

Things To Do

Snorkeling That Feels Like Swimming in a Fish Tank

Pigeon Island's accessibility of the reef is its finest feature. You just wade in, put on your mask, and you are already floating above coral gardens without swimming far. Schools of parrotfish, butterflyfish, angelfish, even clownfish dart about you.

The water is warm; the visibility is usually excellent; and simply floating over a reef with the sun on your back has a calming effect. Perhaps you will even catch sight of a blacktip reef shark. Not to worry; they are modest, shy, and really more terrified of you , than you are of them!

Wander the Island

Even if most people come to snorkel, it's worth strolling around the island. Though small, you will find rocky outcrops, areas of vegetation, and peaceful little corners with breathtaking views back toward the continent. If fortune favors you, you will see the namesake pigeons of the island swooping above.

Best Time to Visit

Plan your east coast trip for the dry season, which runs from May to September. This period often provides a calm sea, a clear sky, and perfect snorkeling visibility.
On weekends and public holidays, the island can get crowded; if you want a more laid-back experience, try to visit early in the morning or on a weekday.

How to Get There

Most visitors remain in Nilaveli or adjacent Uppuveli, both of which are beautiful beaches just outside Trincomalee. From Nilaveli Beach, the island is reached by a 10 to 15 minute boat ride. You can arrange a trip straight with a local boat operator, through your hotel or a beach side rental shop.
If you have your own mask and fins, just pay for the park entrance fees , boat price and waiting fee.

Good to Know

  • Pigeon Island is a protected national park, thus there’s a small entrance fee charged by the Department of Wildlife Conservation.
  • There are no shops or facilities on the island—so arm yourself with water, snacks, basic first-aid and anything else you need for a couple of hours.
  • Wear reef-safe sunscreen to protect both your skin and the coral.
  • Be gentle with the reef. Please don’t touch , pick or stand on the coral

Where to Stay

Your best bet if you wish to remain near the action is Nilaveli. From trendy beach side bungalows to simple guesthouses, there are lots of choices. Planning is made easy by some hotels that also provide transfers, boat trips and snorkeling equipment.

Little further south, Uppuveli has more of a backpacker vibe with fantastic restaurants and laid-back beach bars if you want to relax after a day in the sea.

Final Thoughts

Pigeon Island is one of the locations in Sri Lanka that seem to be a secret hideaway. It's not flashy or over-exploited; that's exactly what appeals. It's simply you, the sea, and a whole universe of aquatic life just waiting to be explored.

During the dry season, if you are visiting Trincomalee or the east coast, kindly schedule time for this small getaway. It's easily reachable, unforgettable to visit, and a reminder of the need for preserving sites of similar nature.

Go slowly. Float free-spiritedly. Remember ; the island is just as lovely above the water as it is below.
