Rock pools were not always present in Thalpe, as most individuals believe, according to locals and literature regarding the city's urban history. In reality, the villagers disassembled them and employed them to soak coconut husks, a step in the process of separating coconut coir from the husk. The rock basins have been abandoned and returned to nature, despite the fact that the coconut industry continues to be a significant component of the local economy and culture in the region. Currently, they are a tourist attraction that is relatively obscure, yet it appears to be in high demand and has been increasing in popularity in recent years.

Snorkeling in the Rock Pools


Though small in size , these rock pools are home to some of the most colorful fish on the southern coast. On some days, you would see local fishermen engaging in the act of scouting for ornamental fish in the reef. So, put those goggles on and find Nemo! You may also get a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to snorkel with the legendary octopus fishermen if you get in there pretty early.

Getting There

Upon reaching Thalpe, you can reach the Rock Pools by travelling along the A2 road towards Matara until you pass Unawatuna and continue for a short distance just beyond Mihiripenna. Thalpe is the next stop after Mihiripenna. Upon arrival, you may consult a map or billboards that indicate the location of the rock pools or request directions from residents.

What to Wear and Bring

The rock pools are encrusted with soft green algae and coral reefs, so it is not necessary to be vigilant for sharp edges that could cause a sting or cut to your skin. However, it is recommended that you exercise caution when travelling along the reefs or otherwise interacting with the rock pools. In addition, there is minimal concern regarding attire, as this is a beach location and beachwear is consistently used.

The shore area is accessible to the majority of individuals; however, the regulations regarding pets may differ in specific locations, so it is advisable to be cautious. The accessibility of the rock pools is somewhat restricted, particularly in that they must be accessed by trekking along the reefs. Therefore, it may be necessary for the elderly and young to exercise caution when walking along them, as they may become unstable in specific areas.
