Dowa Ancient Rock Temple
About Dowa Ancient Rock Temple
Dhowa Rock Temple is an ancient cave temple located just a few kilometers from Ella. Dating back over 2,000 years, it is famous for its large unfinished Buddha statue carved directly into a rock face and its serene spiritual atmosphere.
A 12-meter tall Buddha image carved into the rock, believed to date back to the 1st century BC.
The cave contains faded Kandyan-era paintings and a small stupa, reflecting Sri Lanka’s deep Buddhist heritage.
Surrounded by greenery and less crowded than major temples, it offers a calm spiritual escape.
Local folklore also links the temple area to the ancient epic Ramayana.
