Kumana National Park
About Kumana National Park
Kumana National Park is a tranquil wildlife sanctuary on Sri Lanka’s southeastern coast, renowned for its rich birdlife and peaceful wetlands. Often called the island’s premier birdwatching destination, the park combines lagoons, mangrove swamps, and forests that attract both resident and migratory birds.
The park’s famous mangrove swamp attracts thousands of migratory birds, making it one of Sri Lanka’s most important bird nesting areas.
Spot painted storks, pelicans, egrets, herons, and rare migratory species that gather in large colonies during nesting seasons.
Beyond birds, the park is home to elephants, crocodiles, wild boar, and occasionally leopards roaming the dry forest landscape.
Kumana offers a quieter safari experience compared to the busier Yala National Park nearby.
Scenic lagoons and mangrove habitats create stunning natural views and excellent photography opportunities.
