Red Mosque
About Red Mosque
The Red Mosque, officially known as Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque, is one of Colombo’s most striking architectural landmarks. Built in 1909, its bold red-and-white candy-striped façade and unique Indo-Saracenic design make it one of the most photographed buildings in Sri Lanka.
The mosque’s distinctive candy-striped exterior creates a dramatic visual contrast in the bustling streets of Pettah.
A blend of Islamic, Indian, and colonial architectural influences makes this structure architecturally unique.
In the early 20th century, sailors approaching Colombo Port reportedly used the mosque’s minarets as a navigational reference point.
Located in the heart of Pettah Market, visitors can combine their visit with a vibrant local shopping experience.
The mosque continues to serve Colombo’s Muslim community, especially lively during Friday prayers and Ramadan.
